Natural Dye FAQs
-
Each natural dye source has unique levels of color retention. The conditions of use, storage, and cleaning can all affect the longevity of their color.
The most lightfast items may retain their color for many years before any fading becomes noticeable, while others may only have a a few months of regular wear in them before losing significant color. I prefer to dye with matierials that offer more color stability so following basic care instructions for naturally dyed items should give your goods a long life.
βAll naturally dyed items are more prone to fading in bright light than their synthetically dyed counterparts, so it is always best to store or display naturally dyed items out of direct sunlight. When stored or worn in these conditions, natural dyes can last decades or more. -
Spot and surface cleaning with cool water and mild detergents are preferred when possible. If an item must be washed in its entirety, it should be washed in cold water, using a pH neutral detergent that does not contain enzymatic or peroxide cleaners. Most natural dyes are sensitive to high heat as well as changes in pH and should not be washed with most big-brand laundry detergents. Some "natural" laundry detergents may also be safe to use. Some good products to choose include Eucalan, Woolite Delicates, and Soak. Additionally, most wool items must be hand washed to prevent felting or misshaping.
Never dry clean naturally dyed items. While this may seem counterintuitive, the chemical solvents used in those processes can strip the colors along with any grime you hope to eliminate. Frequent washing can also expedite fading.
